The Wilderness Experience
Sustainable Peace Network - Scottish Highlands 2010
Since 2005 the Glencree Centre for Reconciliation has included a visit to the Scottish Highlands as part of the deep dialogue and relationship cultivation process with successive annual ‘core groups’. This process has been continued and further developed under the banner of the Irish Peace Centres. Central to this core group process is the use of wild nature/wilderness as a challenging ‘third space’ to bring people from deeply divided backgrounds together in a place of shared vulnerability and away from normal distractions. The physical journey to and within a place such as the Scottish Highlands encourages participants to go on a journey of deeper understanding, and enables them to undertake a personal journey of exploration and self-discovery. This involves the building of new relationships and a greater awareness of the valuable contributions that individuals can make to the wider process of peace building within and across communities.
