Our Programmes
Faith and Peace
This area of work consists in the continuation of engagement with people who are part of faith groups and for people to whom faith is important. Clergy, congregations, and groups both in and out of faith-structures become involved to talk about the role of faith in forming attitudes that contribute to, or detract from, sustainable relationships.
Faith is a personal and emotive part of one’s identity, and plays an important role in finding alternatives to violent conflict and cultivating peace. The history of religious language being used in conflict has impacted upon the role the church plays, and is perceived to play, in both traditional and new social divides.
The Faith and Peace work aims to uncover the role of faith in cultivating positive relationships between people, and addressing divisions caused by faith. There is a particular appreciation for how social action by people of faith is often influenced by how the text of that faith is read as well as for the role of theological and other students as future leaders in churches and beyond. In the Faith and Peace strand of Sustainable Relations there is also an emphasis on the need for an engagement with those perceived as the ‘Other.’ These activities will continue to promote respect for difference and human rights between people of different sexual orientations, as well as between those from different faith, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
